Her last project- Pavements The latest project curated by visual artist Aggeliki Simeonidi is constituted by a series of black and white photos from very close-up shots of sidewalks, whose concrete slabs are cracked in various spots and eaten away by the unrelenting decay of time. On the surface of massive concrete, exposed both to the perpetual changes of seasons and weather conditions and to the ceaseless hurried steps and footfalls of passersby, the deterioration of matter is clearly imprinted on the cracks, on the deep wrinkles crossing the concrete from end to end, and also on the tiny amorphous marks that shape its appearance.
Using these photos as guides, Aggeliki Simeonidi initially developed a series of small engravings, in which she essentially sought to recreate the impression of abstract lines and the arbitrary corrosion of concrete matter. Afterwards, these patterns were transposed on paper and the artist used the technique of collage to develop “Gold Pavements”, the miniscule ornaments of Athens’s urban structure: a world of streets, footprints, crossings and thoughts, a labyrinth of tiny lines and forms unfolding underneath our feet – which the artist herself dubs
